Is Social Media on it’s way to becoming the norm?
Monday, June 22, 2009 at 3:44PM In recent days we have all witnessed the power of Social Media, and what impact it has on our world. The protest in Iran is one such example of how sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube helped to get the word out. This new brand of media seems to carry far and wide the information that traditional media doesn’t.
By traditional media I mean news agencies such as FOXNews, CNN, MSNBC, etc. These agencies are independently owned and only voice the opinion of their higher ups. FOXNews is a conservative news network that voices the opinion of right wing conservatives. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just that I prefer an unbiased opinion. I prefer CNN when I watch the news, and when it comes to reading the headlines it’s the New York Times, USA Today, CNN, and various blogs, and tweets.
All of my news from Iran came to me over Twitter, and I saw the horrible death of that poor girl on YouTube. These are the things that the traditional news agencies were hesitant to speak about. They said they were unconfirmed reports, but later CNN was showing some of the video with the girl Neda being blurred, out of respect to her family.
This is the world we live in now, many people seem to feel that Twitter will fade away, which isn’t necessarily untrue since I feel it serves a very good purpose, and still others feel that this social networking is just a fad. The same was said about Television, and the computer. Social networking isn’t going any where, and I do believe that it will evolve into something even better in years to come.
